EXPRESS LOT #4
PROJECT DESCRIPTION
As part of an effort to meet the increasing demand for parking spaces due to student and employee population growth, the University of Alabama at Birmingham embarked on the construction of a new surface remote parking lot to add 1400 new parking spaces to its parking inventory. The proposed development consisted of the demolition of existing buildings, parking lot and site improvements and the construction new parking spaces. The parking lot serves as a transit stop for the University’s Transit System and heavy-duty asphalt and concrete pavements were utilized for the main drives to accommodate bus traffic.
In response to sustainability and environmental concerns on an urban campus, this project incorporated the design of over a ½ mile of bio-swales, an urban landform used to convey surface water in order to enhance infiltration and reduce surface runoff. The bio-swale serves to reduce sediment load and other water pollutants from reaching natural watercourses. At DCS, we place a strong emphasis on well-designed low impact developments and cost effective solutions, which consider environmental concerns.
