HIDEAWAY ROAD BRIDGE REPLACEMENT
PROJECT DESCRIPTION
This project involved the replacement of a single-access bridge on Hideaway Road, traversing a tributary of the Alabama River and serving as the sole entry point to Sand Island. The original structure, featuring timber decking, piles, and beams, had reached the end of its service life and required an accelerated construction schedule to maintain critical access for residents and emergency services.
The new precast concrete bridge, comprising a mud slab and precast abutments, was successfully installed in just five days—demonstrating efficient coordination and precision. The typical roadway section included an undivided two-lane configuration with two-foot aggregate shoulders, accommodating both passenger and commercial vehicles while enhancing overall safety.
Engineering services encompassed the full spectrum of roadway and bridge design tasks, including the development of horizontal and vertical geometrics, plan and profile sheets, and a paving layout. Detailed cross-sections ensured proper integration of the superstructure with the approaches. A comprehensive traffic control plan minimized disruptions during construction, while erosion and sedimentation control measures protected the surrounding environment. Through these coordinated efforts, the project team delivered a robust, low-maintenance bridge that meets modern standards and secures reliable access for the local community.
