PROTECTIVE STADIUM

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

The Birmingham-Jefferson Convention Complex (BJCC) is Alabama’s premier sports, convention and entertainment center. This project was to design and construct Protective Stadium, a 45,000-seat open air stadium on its campus. The stadium is home to the UAB Blazers Football Team and hosts the annual Birmingham Bowl.

Its main entrance, facing south, opens onto a large open “event plaza” flanked by retail/restaurant strips serving as an extension of the Uptown entertainment district. Luxury suites and press areas are clustered on the west side of the stadium, accessed from a “VIP entrance” and from a sky bridge connecting to the BJCC’s East Exhibition Hall near the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame.

Efforts were coordinated with other architectural disciplines to provide a comprehensive design. Engineering services included topographic survey, civil site design, site grading and drainage plan, erosion and sediment control plans and construction administration.
